# Are Pyramid Schemes Good?

**Updated:** April 2026

Oleksandr Honcharov, CEO at FlawlessMLM

Are pyramid schemes good? No. Pyramid schemes are not good for anyone except the small group of people who start them or join at the very top. For everyone else, they result in financial loss, damaged relationships, and wasted time. There is no version of a pyramid scheme that benefits the majority of participants.

**Why Some People Think They Are Good**

The people at the top of a pyramid scheme often make real money, and they are vocal about it. They show off income, cars, and lifestyle to attract new recruits. This creates the illusion that the opportunity works. But what they do not show is the thousands of people below them who paid for that lifestyle.

Some people confuse pyramid schemes with legitimate MLM or direct selling businesses. A legitimate MLM company sells real products to real customers and pays commissions based on sales volume. A pyramid scheme does not — its revenue comes from recruitment.

**Definition:** Pyramid schemes are not good. They are designed to transfer money from the majority of participants to a small group at the top, resulting in financial losses for over 99% of people who join.

If you are looking for a real business opportunity with low startup costs and team-based earning, look into legitimate network marketing companies with real products and transparent compensation plans.
