# Are All MLMs Pyramid Schemes?

No, not all MLMs are pyramid schemes, but many operate in a gray zone. A legitimate MLM generates most of its revenue from product sales to real customers outside the distributor network. An MLM that earns primarily from distributor recruitment and required purchases is functionally a pyramid scheme. Are all MLMs pyramid schemes depends on the specific company's income source.

**How legitimate MLMs differ from pyramid schemes**

*   **Source of income** — legitimate MLMs earn from retail product sales; pyramids earn from recruitment fees.
*   **FTC 70% rule** — at least 70% of sales should be to outside retail customers, not to distributors qualifying for commissions.
*   **Refund policies** — legitimate MLMs buy back unused inventory at 90% within 12 months. Pyramids do not.
*   **Income disclosures** — legitimate MLMs publish income data across all rank levels.
*   **Distributor losses** — even in legal MLMs, FTC data shows that 70-99% of distributors earn less than minimum wage after expenses.
*   **Examples of legal MLMs** — Amway, Mary Kay, Pampered Chef, Tupperware Brands, Avon, Nu Skin.

**Definition:** Not all MLMs are pyramid schemes. Legitimate MLMs generate most of their revenue from real product sales to outside customers, publish income disclosures, and offer refund policies. MLMs that depend on recruitment fees and required distributor purchases function as pyramid schemes regardless of how they label themselves.

Even legal MLMs are a poor financial choice for most participants. The legality of the company doesn't change the income disclosure data, which consistently shows that 70-99% of distributors lose money or earn very little.
